On the pick of the popular Master Chef TV show, and the arrival of Michelin's guide in Thailand only one idea was in mind - The BAO battle.
Indeed nothing could be better than organizing a culinary battle between a restaurant chef and a 1 Michelin star Chef from the nursery of fine dining cuisine - La France.
The duel was between the chef of the host restaurant Nun Bao (the first Bao restaurant on Koh Samui island), and the Michelin-starred chef Nicolas Isnard. Notably Nicolas Isnard co-own the restaurant – L'Auberge de la Charme in France. L'Auberge de la Charme earned a Michelin star in 2009, in fact within just a year of opening.
The WIN of the event was to be the first restaurant not located in a Hotel to invite a Michelin started chef to Koh Samui Island.
However, the Michelin starred chef's challenge was to cook Asian street food (steamed Taiwanese style Bao burgers). In addition to cooking in a simple tropical kitchen without his whole team, but only one sous-chef.
All the tickets were sold after a short announcement on social media; the event fastly became a closed event. Each guest received a reservation card to access the event. A special branded apron was created as a gift for the Chefs and half aprons for the sous-Chefs. In addition, were created branded caps.
The mood of the even was cozy and friendly, tropical and eco-oriented as the branding lines of the restaurant. There was no dress code for the event, and the aperitif started at the beach, barefooted, watching the sunset. It was a feeling like during dinner with friends, but with a culinary battle twist.
The Battle Day
On the day of the event, each guest received the Menu, a handwritten welcome leave with an orchid flower, and little pieces of paper to vote for each type of course. No one knew who cooked which BAO, after the dinner each guest voted for the most delicious BAO.
After the votes, the chef of the hosting restaurant lost the Bao battle to the Michelin starred chef Nicolas Isnard. But indeed became the first chef to challenge a Michelin starred Chef on Koh Samui Island.
